I eyed the chocolate birthday cake through the window with delight. They were going to distribute the slices soon. I offered to help, but Trina’s parents insisted that they were fine, shooing me out of the kitchen. Now I stood in their yard, helping Trina’s brother, Oliver, with the barbecue grill. He was around thirty, dark hair that nearly touched his shoulders.

“You don’t have to help. Go relax,” he said as he flipped a skewer on the grill. “I’ll live.”

I shrugged. “It’s okay. This way I’m being productive.”

“Do you have any idea where my sister is, by any chance?” He craned his neck. “She was supposed to help me for a bit.”

With Travis. Thinking of them together twisted my stomach in knots. I tried to get it off my mind. It was ridiculous. He gave me Christmas, but to him, it hadn’t really meant anything more. “The last time I saw her, she was talking to Travis.”

His mouth hung open. “Travis came?”

“Yes. Why do you look so surprised?”

He grimaced. “It was a couple of years ago. My sister was young when she first met him. After her ex left her, she probably was infatuated with Travis for a little while. She’d call him for different occasions and drop off some food. That kinda thing. You know, to get his notice. I was pretty sure she was over it now.”

Suddenly, I regretted asking the question. I didn’t want to be having this conversation anymore.

He saw my face and he started laughing. “What’s wrong? You look like you ate a lemon.”

“Were they ever together?” I found myself forcing the words out, even though I probably wouldn’t like the answer. I hated that I had to ask. That it mattered to me, what he’d say.

Oliver’s mouth opened. “No,” the reply came, dark and foreboding.

I froze. It wasn’t Oliver’s voice that answered.
